French Healer Dies in Prison

Paul St. Pierre died in Azkaban last night at about 9:35 PM, say Azkaban officials.

"Sometimes there are years of hearings and legal processes before the kiss can actually be administered. The kiss was supposed to be administered to Martin Lark last night," says Akzaban Warden Barry S. Aditic. Instead the dementor chosen to administer the kiss administered it to St. Pierre.

"These things happen," says Head of Magical Law Enforcement B. Crouch. "Its really no great loss, is it?"

St. Pierre was serving a life sentance for the use of Unforgiveables, the use of illegal mind magic, blackmail, racketeering, negligent medicine, and kidnapping, and as an accessory to murder.

Martin Lark is scheduled to recieve the kiss tonight at 11:00 PM.

Odyssey Corporation Faces Dismantling

International Law Enforcement arrested the entire Board of Directors of the Odyssey Corporation on a raid staged June 10, 1976.

The operation was kept quiet for weeks while InterLe continued to track down and round up other members of the corporation. "The Board, and several key persons within the board, is responsible for a laundry list of crimes," says Agent Tellegato of the InterLe. "Including the use of their resources to fund mercenary armies for their own private, pureblood centrist agenda all over the world."

International assassin Zellah Redwater was killed in the self same raid, by member of local Law Enforcement Vincent Nosfertum. Local law enforcement had no comment on events.

Odyssey's "child corporations" are left scrambling. Dante corporation has already been dismantled by InterLe and all of its properties sold at discount. Business interests around the world, especially, are snapping up those deals left and right. Zolarvoid camera company is discussing a loan to cover their interests and go independant. Cleansweep has already reorganized and gone independent, as has Mrs. Skowers. Others scramble for sponsors, and there is much talk of Sulmahn, Inc. There is no telling yet what 17 year old Jabari Sulmahn, inheritor of Sulmahn, Inc., will be doing in response.

Investment corporations all over the wizarding world are scrambling to take up the slack on these tasty bits. Odyssey spokesperson Mr. Sergio Aguillar, though, says, "The Board is an elected body of officials in a company, not the company itself. I think its too early for these reorganizations and we'll be meeting with each of our interests to try to salvage what we can and reorganize. We may be making some changes to try to absorb this blow. A few rotten apples, even at Odyssey's core, does not change the strength and vision of our corporation, nor the fact that it has been a pillar of wizarding society for decades. Odyssey's not done yet."

Time will tell.

DP REPORTER MURDERED
August 31, 1976

Daily Prophet reporter Hale W. Stellars was found dead this morning. The body was located between Harold's Cleaners and The Golden Buddha in downtown London. The body was discovered a little before 6:30 am on August 31 when a garbage collector was emptying out the dumpsters. Trainee Chase Monaghan and Sr. Trainee Kauton Dekere of the MLE were called to the scene.

"He was a great guy, and the best investigative reporter I know. If there's anyone who saw anything from last night to this morning, I encourage them to contact me or another auror at the MLE," said Monaghan.

The strike came in Sussex, in a Muggle suburb. Unknown suspects dropped crates full of magical creatures and let their contents loose upon unsuspecting Muggles. As MAC and RCMC arrived on the scene to begin containing the problem, 7 masked Dark Wizards struck. They swept into the crowd, firing cruciatus curses and killing curses on the Muggles and Ministry personell alike.

Pierce Vyce, Len Biggs and Van Wicker from MAC were murdered. Jacob Pisfill and Connor Sneff of RCMC were also killed. An estimation on the Muggle deaths is still pending. 10 sustained injuries, both from the Dark Wizards and the creatures. The Dark Wizards did fire off the Dark Mark. Senior Oblivator Ethan Wize of MAC called the MLE to the scene, but by the time he was able to do so, the Dark Wizards, clearly not concerned about temporal anomalies, were already portkeying away.

Adeptus Adelaide Nosfertum was the first responding Auror on the scene, and though the Dark Wizards took potshots at her as they left, she was unable to engage. Neophytes Simms and Charleston arrived next, along with Sr. Trainee Zechariah Craddock. Together they secured the scene, cleared out unharmed civilians, and got emergency medical personell on site.

"It was extremely clean," said Neophyte Jake Simms. "We'll of course be following up, but we're just not seeing a lot of leads here."

Portkey Anomolies Grow Worse, New Laws Pending

In the wake of yesterday's Dark Wizard attack, several survivors were able to describe very accurately the effects of portkey usage. "There were these rips in the air," Quin Manna of MAC says. "Really long, about -- oh I'd say arm length. They were silver around the edges, but it looked just like there was some yellow mist inside. I'd say they remained for about 30, 40 seconds."

Citizens are urged NOT to expiriment with these rifts. "Do not put your hands inside of them, do not try to stick your head in them," urges James Agaston of the Department of Magical Transportation. "Leave them alone if you see them and contact a DOT Agent right away."

D.O.T. is out taking readings on known rift appearance sites to turn over to the Department of Mysteries.

The laws regulating portkey usage are scheduled to pass in just a few days. In the meantime, Minister of Magic Millicent Bagnold had this to say: "With the phenomena growing worse I can only urge every single citizen to avoid using portkeys and to turn them over immediately, for their own safety. We have, frankly, never seen anything like this before and we don't know what the next iteration will be. Ideally, there won't be one, because our warnings will be heeded."

PERSONAL PORTKEYS DECLARED ILLEGAL

Following multiple reports of increased "rift style" activity in conjunction with widespread portkey use, the Ministry of Magic announced this morning the passing of The Personal Portkey Regulations Act. The act renders personal portkeys illegal, and allows only for mass transit style portkeys set up by the Ministry of Magic to get no less than 15 people at a time to a specific event.

"They were going to outlaw them completely," says Kendra Wallace of the Department of Magical Games and Sports. "But we impressed upon the Minister and the D.O.T. how important mass transit portkeys are to get lots of people to the Quidditch World Cup and the like."

Mass transit portkeys are also being allowed, on a regular schedule much like the train schedule, for paying passengers, to be used for international travel. Funds will bolster the flagging Department of Transportation Department, who now has an entirely new level of regulation and control on its hands when it comes to the devices.

"Dark Wizards certainly seem to be ignoring the warnings," says Neophyte Jake "Not that it's any surprise that they could care less about the safety of the world at large, you'd think they'd look to their own. Still, MLE is already getting with D.O.T. about ensuring the public's safety when it comes to portkey violators." Simms adds: "Come on folks, don't get caught with one out of carelessness or foolishness. Turn them in right away."

The tax break deadline has passed, but the MLE and D.O.T. have offered a "forgiveness period" extending till December 31st, which allows people to come and turn in illegal portkeys without penalty, so long as they are brought to the Ministry.

DP: 10 Muggles Kidnapped, 4 Returned

October 12, 1976-- Muggles were in a panic yesterday afternoon following a kidnapping in London which happened in broad daylight by a group of dark-clad Wizards rumoured to be followers of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. "The Muggles saw them Side-by-Disapparate," said Richard Hughes, an Obliviator in Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. "We alerted MLE immediately."
Thankfully, MLE also responded immediately. Bartemius Crouch, Head of the department, was able to gather a team of Hitwizards and Aurors to the scene where the Muggles were being held captive. "We don't negotiate with Dark Wizards," Crouch emphasised. "It is unfortunate only four Muggles were recovered, but we did not allow the criminals responsible to get away with all of them. I sincerely offer my condolences to those families who had lost loved ones."
Crouch continues to remain optimistic but urges wizards and witches to remain alert. "We live in a time of danger, but I remain confident that these despicable acts of inhumanity will be stopped and their perpetrators brought to full justice."

Citizen Hero Defies Death Eater

(October 25, 1976) In our comfortable illusions of safety we often forget how very dangerous the world can be. The adventure of Mr. John Smith* began this evening with a simple shopping trip to Diagon Alley. He was in the company of an Auror friend of his, Adeptus Ted Naylor.

It all happened in an instant. A young girl of perhaps six or seven, under the influence of the Imperious curse, lunged at Naylor with a knife. And the man who they'd taken to be his father grabbed Mr. Smith.

The assailant proved to be none other than Death Eater Adolph Shredl, a villian growing in notority by the day. Shredl, in response to some percieved wrong on the part of Mr. Smith, threatened to torture and murder innocent Muggles in front of Smith as retaliation. Smith convinced Shredl to turn all of his attentions on himself. Smith was subjected to the Cruciatus Curse, enduring untold minutes of agony. When Smith came to, Shredl was crouched over him. In a stroke of rare bravery, Smith struk Shredl in the nose and tried to escape. Shredl then knocked Smith out and tied him by the ankle to the hour hand of Big Bend, leaving him to die or be rescued as fate would allow. This was the Death Eater's idea of giving Smith a sporting chance.

As it happens, Smith was rescued. A fellow citizen, Mary Testy*, arrived on the scene and helped him down. Fifty-three minutes had passed between Smith's initial abduction and Testy's subsequent call for help to the MLE. Smith is now home and safe.

"It wasn't exactly bravery, but just doing what I thought had to be done," says Smith, who is a Healer by trade. Hero, survivor, or simply lucky, it is hard to dispute that Smith displayed an iron will and fortitude in the face of such a formidable foe.

Adolph Shredl remains at large. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone with information that might lead to the capture or arrest of this wanted criminal should contact the Department of Magical Law Enforcement immediately.
